Pool lights are one of those elements that can really turn a pool into something special. Few sights in contemporary domestic life pack quite the aesthetic punch of walking out a backdoor at night to see an inground pool beautifully lit from both above and below. It’s the kind of thing dreams are made of. It’s also eminently practical in that it doubles the useful hours of your pool and makes it easy to keep an eye on the kids while they’re swimming at night. As pool builders, we have to admit to loving pool lights as well as they show our work in the best possible light (so to speak).
Pool Builders Chime In on Why Pool Lights Rule
When we build an inground fiberglass pool for a client in Toronto, the subject of lighting invariably comes up. And we love that because it’s one of our favourite topics. Here are a few common questions we get regarding pool lights and our response:
- Should I light my pool? – Absolutely. Pool lights will provide all the benefits mentioned in the opening of this post (beauty, safety, extension of useable hours) and they’ll also add to the value of the pool should you decide to sell your home. Imagine having prospective buyers around after dusk and flipping on the pool lights!
- Should I light both the interior and exterior of the pool? – Think of it this way: Do you light both the hallway and the rooms or just the rooms? While the interior lights will provide all the sparkly stuff, the exterior lights provide invaluable atmosphere as well as safety. You don’t want anyone tripping in the dark on the way to the pool.
- What type of light is best? – Light Emitting Diodes – or LEDs – produce incredible amounts of light using virtually no electricity. They have unbelievable lifespans as well. Fiber optic lights have steadily lost market share with the rise of LEDs, but are still preferred by some customers for the quality of the light they emit.
- How many lights should I use? – This is determined by the size of your pool and the type of lights you choose. For the pool interior anywhere from 1 to 3 LED lights should be sufficient. With fiber optic lights you’ll need quite a robust system to light a large pool as they emit a fairly low level of light. The number of externals will depend on your overall lighting plan.
- How much do pool lights cost? – It’s difficult to talk specific numbers when it comes to pool lights other than to say that the lights you buy this year will be cheaper and do a better job than the lights someone else installed a decade ago.
- Are they safe? – If installed by certified pros, like the pool builders of Seabreeze Pools, the answer is, absolutely. But remember: we’re talking about the combination of water and electricity, so they should never be installed by anyone who isn’t fully qualified.
